Think Your Drink Was Spiked? What a Drug Test Can Show

If you think you were drugged, get safe and seek medical care first. An emergency department can assess you, treat you and collect samples, and police can collect evidence if a crime may have happened. A lab drug test you collect at home can identify many drugs used to spike drinks, but not all of them, and many leave the body within hours to a few days β€” so if you choose to test, collect as soon as you can.

Get help first

  • If you feel unwell, confused, very drowsy or cannot stay awake, call 911 or go to an emergency department now.
  • If you think you were assaulted, the RAINN National Sexual Assault Hotline is available 24/7 at 800-656-4673.
  • If you want police involved, tell them before you collect a sample yourself β€” they may want samples collected with a documented chain of custody.

What our lab confirmation can identify

Our at-home drug test with full LC-MS/MS confirmation identifies each drug by name. Relevant to drink spiking, it includes:

  • Benzodiazepines: alprazolam (Xanax), a clonazepam (Klonopin) metabolite, lorazepam (Ativan), nordiazepam (a diazepam/Valium metabolite), oxazepam and temazepam
  • Sleep medicine: zolpidem (Ambien)
  • Ketamine and its metabolite
  • MDMA
  • Opioids, including fentanyl
  • Xylazine
  • Carisoprodol (Soma), a muscle relaxant
  • ETS, a marker of recent alcohol use

The standard 12-panel screen on its own does not name these individual drugs, so for this purpose add confirmation: urine $178 or fingerstick blood $188 in total. Urine usually has the longer detection window.

What it does not test for

No test covers every drug. Our confirmation does not test for:

  • GHB β€” one of the drugs most often linked with spiking
  • Rohypnol (flunitrazepam)
  • Scopolamine
  • Some over-the-counter sedatives, such as diphenhydramine

A negative result therefore does not prove you were not drugged. A hospital can order specialized testing for these substances.

Why timing matters

Many of these drugs clear quickly. GHB is usually undetectable in urine after about 12 hours, and many others fall below detectable levels within 1–3 days. If you decide to test, collect your first urine sample as soon as possible β€” but never delay medical care to do it.

This is not a forensic test

An at-home kit is collected without an observer or a legal chain of custody, so it is not a forensic test and may not be accepted as evidence. It is designed to give you private, laboratory-quality information. If a crime may have occurred, let police or a hospital arrange collection.

Talk to a licensed physician

A drug test result is information, not a diagnosis or medical advice. Review your results, any medications you take and any symptoms with a licensed physician, and call 911 or go to an emergency department if someone is in danger. See our medical disclaimer.

Common questions

Can a drug test show if my drink was spiked?
It can identify many drugs used to spike drinks, such as benzodiazepines, zolpidem, ketamine, MDMA and opioids, if you test soon enough. It cannot rule spiking out, because it does not test for GHB, Rohypnol or scopolamine.
Does your drug test detect GHB?
No. GHB is not on our test, and it usually leaves urine within about 12 hours. A hospital can order specialized testing.
Does your drug test detect Rohypnol?
No. Rohypnol (flunitrazepam) is not on our confirmation panel.
How soon should I test after a suspected spiking?
As soon as possible, because many of these drugs clear within hours to a few days. Seek medical care first if you feel unwell.
Should I use urine or blood?
Urine usually has the longer detection window for most substances, which matters when time has passed.
Can I use an at-home test as evidence?
It is not a forensic, chain-of-custody test and may not be accepted as evidence. If you want police involved, contact them before collecting a sample yourself.
How much does it cost?
A urine drug test with full LC-MS/MS confirmation is $178, or $188 with a fingerstick blood sample.
Will the result be private?
Yes. You are told when your result is ready and you sign in to your account to see it; emails and texts never include the result.
Do I need to see a doctor about my results?
Yes, if you have questions about a result, a medication or your health, review it with a licensed physician. A positive result is not a diagnosis, and prescription medicines are a common reason for one. If someone is in danger, call 911.
